The Ketogenic Diet for the Holiday Bulge

Here it comes! The Holidays are here and that means fun, friends, family, and food! A lot of food. The Holidays are a time to celebrate for sure, but too much celebration leads us right into those extra pounds we really didn’t want, or need. The Ketogenic Diet just might be the way for you to not only keep those extra pounds off, but even take off a few pounds you weren’t expecting, all while you are eating some really great indulgent food.

The Ketogenic Diet is straight forward and easy to do. The large part of your calories will be from delicious and indulgent fats. You get to eat wonderful foods like creams, butter, animal fats like a juicy steak, egg yolks, and bacon. Yes, bacon is back! And you can also add avocado, olive oil, and coconut oil, and much more. Here’s the trick with all of this nutritious fat (Yes, it’s nutritious!). You just have to keep your carbohydrates down. So the breads, pastas, rice and beans, and all the holiday baked goods need to be kept to a very low minimum. But you can still indulge with your friends and family during those Holiday parties, you just need to steer clear of the carbs.

The real culprit with weight gain, and we’ve known this for a very long time in medicine, are the carbohydrates, not the fats! It’s really not even the calorie count for a lot of people. It’s just the carbs. If you keep carbs low enough, long enough, your body becomes a fat-burning furnace, and you produce an exhaust called “ketones” that your body will use as a very clean energy source. That’s where the term Ketogenic or Ketosis comes from.

Getting Started Is Easy

  • Keep your carbs down to 50 grams or less a day (Watch those Holiday cookies!)
  • Eat a moderate amount of protein, not too much, not too little. This is about 75-100 grams for women and about 100-125 grams for men.
  • Eat a lot of fats. This will be delicious and very filling and satisfying. Have fun with this!

One of the easiest ways to start your morning and get you used to the Ketogenic Diet is a delicious take on coffee called Keto Coffee. Here’s how you make it:

Brew your favorite coffee. Organic is best!

In a blender, add:

The brewed coffee

1 tablespoon of organic pasture-raised butter

1 tablespoon of organic cream

1 tablespoon of organic coconut oil

1 tablespoon of Medium Chained Triglyceride Oil (available at The Hormone Zone office)

1 scoop of Collagen Peptide Protein (available at The Hormone Zone office)

Blend it for about 20 to 30 seconds and it will be the frothiest, tastiest, creamiest coffee you have ever had! This is a great way to start your day. You won’t be hungry until lunch time. And this all gives you about 500 calories with only 2 grams of carbs and a whopping 50 grams of energy-boosting, fat-burning, high quality fats! Instant ketosis!
